Custom Media Wall in Kitchener-Waterloo

Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario

The homeowners wanted a living-room feature wall that hides every cable and gives the TV a proper home. We designed and built a full-width media wall with a recessed TV niche, a low media shelf, display towers on both sides and LED lighting in every niche.

Drag the slider to compare the framed structure with the finished wall, then follow the build step by step.

  • Custom 2x4 framing anchored to the wall
  • Recessed TV niche with solid mounting backing
  • Hidden power and low-voltage wiring
  • Display towers with lit niches
  • Drywall, corner bead and three-coat finish
  • Primed and painted in a two-tone finish

How we built it — from studs to lighting

  1. Media wall framing with header, TV opening, media shelf and side towers1

    Design and framing

We laid out the TV opening, shelves and towers to suit the room, then framed the whole wall square and level.

  2. Drywall installed over media wall framing with openings for shelves and TV niche2

    Wiring and drywall

Power and cable runs went in before boarding, with blocking behind the TV niche for a secure mount.

  3. Corner bead, taping and drywall compound on a custom media wall3

    Taping and mudding

Corner bead on every edge and three coats of compound give the niches crisp, straight lines.

  4. Sanded and primed media wall with TV mounting backing installed4

    Sanding and primer

Everything was sanded smooth and primed, ready for paint and the TV mount.

  5. Painted media wall with LED lights being installed in the display niches5

    Paint and niche lighting

A two-tone paint finish, with LED puck lights recessed into each display niche.

  6. Completed media wall with large wall-mounted TV, media shelf and built-in shelving6

    TV mounted, wall finished

The TV sits flush in its niche with every wire hidden, and the side towers are ready for decor.

  7. Finished media wall at night with warm LED-lit shelves, an open media ledge and soft toe-kick lighting7

    Finished and styled

At night: the TV recessed in its niche, warm lit shelves on both sides, an open media ledge below and soft toe-kick lighting along the floor.

Walk through the framing

A quick look at the framing before drywall — this is the structure that holds the TV and shelves.

Local knowledge

Building permits in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge

Each city in Waterloo Region issues its own building permits. Finishing a basement, adding a bathroom, removing a load-bearing wall or creating an additional dwelling unit usually needs one. We prepare the drawings, apply to the right city and book the inspections for you.

Ontario now allows additional residential units on most urban residential lots, so many KW homeowners are adding basement suites for rental income or family.

  • They completely transformed our space by renovating our kitchen, replacing all the cabinets, demolishing a wall and installing a structural beam to create a beautiful open-concept layout. … What we appreciated most was his honesty and transparency. The pricing was very reasonable, and everything was done according to our agreed budget with no surprise costs or added expenses.
